🚨 2026 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Tucson PHEV uses an electronic push-button gear selector panel on the center console with P, R, N, D buttons.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and chocked before attempting to shift.
- Connect an external 12V power source (jump box or jumper cables) to the battery to restore electrical power to the shifter system.
- Press the brake pedal firmly, turn the ignition to ON (press start button without brake), then press the N button to shift into Neutral.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and cannot be jumped, the vehicle CANNOT be shifted electronically and must be flatbedded.
- For tow mode (if vehicle must roll): With 12V power restored, shift to N, then turn ignition OFF while keeping foot off brake—the transmission should remain in neutral for towing short distances.
- Verify the vehicle rolls freely before releasing it onto the flatbed.
With zero electrical power
Electronic push-button shifters on Hyundai PHEVs have no mechanical override. The 12V battery MUST be jumped or replaced to provide power to the shift-by-wire system. Without any electrical power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be loaded onto a flatbed with the transmission locked in Park using wheel dollies or a winch.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
PHEV/EV CRITICAL: This vehicle must be flatbedded—do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground (even in Neutral) for more than a few feet. The electric drive components can generate voltage when rotated, potentially damaging the power electronics or creating a safety hazard. If the high-voltage system is damaged or leaking coolant, do not attempt to move the vehicle at all; contact emergency services.
