⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (press START button twice without brake pedal) if 12V battery has any charge.
- Locate the shift-lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover directly left of the shifter base on the console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key from the key fob to pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park.
- Shift to Neutral and hold while releasing the override—the shifter may try to spring back to Park.
- If the vehicle has no electrical power at all, the override will still function mechanically.

With zero electrical power
The mechanical shift-lock override works without any 12V power. Remove the override cover, insert tool, press down, and shift to Neutral. The hybrid system does not need to be active for the override to function.

CRITICAL: Tucson Hybrids must be flatbed towed only. Do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground—the electric motor is mechanically coupled to the drivetrain and will generate dangerous voltage and cause severe damage if wheels rotate during towing. Even in Neutral, flat-towing or dolly-towing will destroy the hybrid system.
