⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake if functional.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is typically found as a small rectangular cover near the base of the shifter console, usually on the right side or front-right of the shifter base.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cover cap.
- With the ignition in ACC or ON position (if battery allows partial power), insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shift lever out of Park toward Neutral.
- If the vehicle has absolutely no power, the electronic shifter may require a jump-start or external 12V power to the battery to activate the shift-by-wire system before the override will function.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift-by-wire system is completely inoperative. You must supply external 12V power (jump pack or jumper cables) to the 12V battery to energize the shifter electronics before the shift lock override will function. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not help here—the 12V system must be operational.
