🚨 2015 Hyundai Veloster: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Veloster with DCT uses a traditional console-mounted shift lever with a mechanical shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position (insert key and turn, no need to start the engine).
  2. If the battery is completely dead, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a cap on the left side of the shifter base.
  3. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or the key to pry off the override cap.
  4. Insert the screwdriver or a similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
  5. Keep the tool pressed while shifting; once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cap.
  6. If the vehicle has any 12V power, simply press the brake pedal and shift normally to Neutral.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base, under a small rectangular cap (approximately 1 inch long). The slot is oriented front-to-back.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, use the mechanical shift lock override as described. The override mechanically releases the solenoid that locks the shifter in Park. You do not need electrical power to use this override—it is purely mechanical.
