🚨 2016 Hyundai Veloster: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 Veloster with DCT uses a conventional console-mounted shift lever with a gated pattern and electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock release cover—a small rectangular cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the exposed shift lock release slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the release down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power is available, continue holding the shift lock release down while manually moving the shifter to Neutral without pressing the brake
  8. Replace the shift lock cover after moving the shifter

With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift lock override must be used. Access the release slot under the cover on the left side of the shifter base, press down with a screwdriver, and manually move the shifter to Neutral. The ignition does not need to be on for the mechanical override to function.
