⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock release access—look for a small cover or slot on the left side of the shifter assembly near the base
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the mechanical key blade to carefully pry off any cover or access the release slot
- Insert the tool into the shift lock release slot and press down firmly
- While holding the release down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the shift lock release down while manually moving the shifter to Neutral
- Replace any cover after the shifter is in Neutral
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base assembly—look for a small rectangular access cover or slot near the driver's side of the shifter
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, use the mechanical shift lock override. Access the release mechanism on the left side of the shifter base, press down with a screwdriver or key blade, and manually move the shifter to Neutral. The mechanical override works without any electrical power.
