⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift lock release button on the shifter (typically integrated into the top or side of the shifter button) while pulling the shifter rearward to move from Park to Neutral.
- If the integrated button does not work or battery is completely dead, locate the shift lock override slot near the base of the shifter assembly.
- Remove the small trim cover or access panel on the console near the shifter base (typically to the right or front-right of the shifter).
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the shift lock override slot and press down while moving the shifter to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or loaded onto a flatbed.
Shift-lock override location
Small access panel or trim cover near the shifter base on the center console, typically to the right or front-right of the shifter mechanism; exact location requires checking the specific console trim.
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you must use the mechanical shift lock override slot accessed through the trim panel near the shifter base. The DCT shifter is electronic but includes this manual override specifically for zero-power situations. Do not attempt to force the shifter without using the override.
