⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface or properly chocked
- Set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if possible (provides power to release the shift lock)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small covered access hole near the base of the shifter assembly on the steering column
- Remove the small plastic cover cap using a flathead screwdriver or similar tool
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously pressing the shifter button and moving the shifter to Neutral
- If the vehicle must be towed, Neutral position is required for short-distance rolling; for long-distance towing, use a flatbed or disconnect the driveshaft
Shift-lock override location
Small covered access slot near the base of the column shifter assembly, typically on the right side or underneath the shroud near where the shifter lever meets the column
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override must be used mechanically. The override slot provides manual release of the shift interlock solenoid without requiring electrical power. Some XG models may require the key to be inserted (even with dead battery) for the steering lock to allow movement.
