🚨 2004 Infiniti M45: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Infiniti M45 (Y34 chassis) features a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine) if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot on the console near the shifter base—typically a small covered opening to the right or rear of the shifter gate
  4. Remove the small cap or trim cover over the override slot using a flat tool or your fingernail
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually shift to Neutral without pressing the brake
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot near the shifter base on the console, typically to the right side of the shifter gate (exact position may vary; inspect closely around shifter perimeter)
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Use the override slot without needing to turn the ignition on. You will not have power steering or power brakes, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed—do not attempt to push or roll any significant distance.
