⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine) if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override release on the right side of the shifter base—there is a small rectangular cap or cover
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or your fingernail to pry off the cap cover
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override release down, press the brake pedal (if power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually shift to Neutral without pressing the brake

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Use the override slot without needing to turn the ignition on. You will not have power steering or power brakes, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed—do not attempt to push or roll any significant distance.
