🚨 1990-2006 Infiniti Q45: Emergency Neutral

The 1990-2006 Infiniti Q45 (spanning G50, Y33, and F50 generations) uses a console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock; configuration is consistent across all three generations.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine) if battery power is available
  3. Locate the shift lock override release on the console near the shifter—there is a small covered slot typically on the right side or front-right of the shifter base
  4. Remove the small cap or cover (it may be labeled with a key symbol or 'SHIFT LOCK') using a small flathead screwdriver or your fingernail
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power is available) and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually shift to Neutral without pressing the brake
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the right side or front-right of the shifter base on the console (varies slightly by generation: 1990-1996 G50, 1997-2001 Y33, 2002-2006 F50, but all use similar override access)
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the shift lock override still functions mechanically. Use the override slot without needing to turn the ignition on. You will not have power steering or power brakes, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed—do not attempt to push or roll any significant distance.
