⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn ignition key to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the lower right side of the steering column shroud, near the base of the shifter lever
- Remove the small plastic cap covering the override slot (may require a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry)
- Insert a small flat-head screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot
- Press the override button/tab firmly downward while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If battery is completely dead and ignition cannot be turned on, you may need to apply additional force to the override - the shifter should release with firm, steady pressure on the override mechanism

With zero electrical power
With zero power, the steering wheel will be locked. You will need to manually override the shift lock as described, but the vehicle cannot be steered. Flatbed towing is required - do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground as the steering will not unlock without power and the transmission may not lubricate properly.
