🚨 2016 Infiniti QX60: Emergency Neutral

The 2016 QX60 Hybrid uses a console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock and CVT transmission, identical to the 2015 model.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. If possible, turn the ignition to ON without starting the hybrid system (press START button without pressing brake)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small covered opening on the lower right side of the shifter base assembly, typically marked with a small icon
  4. Carefully pry off the small rectangular cover cap using a flathead screwdriver or the key blade
  5. Press and hold the brake pedal (if battery has some charge), or proceed without brake if no power
  6. Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  7. While holding the override down, move the shift lever to Neutral
  8. If the hybrid system was ON, you should see 'N' displayed on the instrument cluster
  9. Remove the tool and verify the shifter remains in Neutral position
Shift-lock override location
Small covered slot on the lower right side of the shifter base assembly, typically near the P button or shift gate
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override becomes very difficult. The CVT may not mechanically engage Neutral without some 12V power. Attempt to connect a jump pack or external charger to the 12V battery (located under the hood) to provide minimal power for the shift lock solenoid and transmission controller before attempting the override procedure. If completely unsuccessful, professional flatbed towing with dollies is required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID WARNING: The QX60 Hybrid has a high-voltage battery system and electric motors. DO NOT attempt to tow this vehicle with drive wheels on the ground - this can cause severe transmission/motor damage and potential electrical hazards. Use only flatbed or wheel-lift with rear wheels raised. If you must roll the vehicle a short distance (onto a flatbed), Neutral can only be safely used for very short distances at very low speeds. Ensure the hybrid system is completely OFF before attempting any movement.
