⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake fully
- Turn the ignition to ON position if battery has any charge (press START button twice without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular cap
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the shift lock override cap
- Insert the key blade or small flathead screwdriver straight down into the override slot
- While holding the override pressed down firmly, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the shifter will move freely to N without brake pedal pressure
- Replace the override cap after shifting

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the hybrid system cannot enable shift functions. The shift lock override will mechanically release the shifter, but you must use the override method to move to Neutral. Jump-starting the 12V battery (located under hood) is recommended to enable normal shifter operation. If jump-starting is not possible, use the override slot method and have vehicle towed on flatbed only.

HYBRID VEHICLE: This QX60 Hybrid has no traditional tow-mode and MUST be transported on a flatbed tow truck with ALL wheels off the ground. Towing with any wheels on the ground will cause severe damage to the hybrid drive system. The electric motors remain engaged even in Neutral unless the high-voltage system is properly isolated, which cannot be done with a dead battery.
