🚨 2003 Isuzu Ascender: Emergency Neutral
The 2003 Isuzu Ascender automatic uses a floor-mounted console shifter (GM platform-shared design) with an electronic shift interlock system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Engage the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the driver's side (left side) of the shifter base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the override cap
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar rigid tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override depressed, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no electrical power exists, keep the override depressed and move the shifter manually - it should release with the override activated
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular slot with removable cap on the left (driver's) side of the shifter base, just forward of the shifter handle
With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override must be manually depressed to release the shifter. The steering column lock will remain engaged without power, so you may need to jump-start the 12V battery momentarily to unlock the steering wheel before loading onto a flatbed. The Ascender shares GM TrailBlazer/Envoy platform components, so the override mechanism is electrically dependent but mechanically releasable.
