🚨 2004 Isuzu Axiom: Emergency Neutral

The 2004 Axiom uses a traditional console-mounted shift lever with cable-actuated shift-lock tied to the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ON or ACC position (no power needed for the shift-lock override itself, but ACC may help with steering unlock).
  3. Locate the shift-lock override button on the driver's side (left side) of the shifter console, typically covered by a small removable cap or trim piece.
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool to remove the small cap covering the override access.
  5. Press and hold the override button down firmly using the screwdriver.
  6. While holding the override button, pull the shifter rearward out of Park into Neutral.
  7. Release the override button once in Neutral; the shifter should stay in position.
  8. For towing, keep in Neutral and ensure the transfer case (if 4WD-equipped) is in 2H for flatbed or dolly towing of rear wheels.
Shift-lock override location
Driver's side of the center console shifter base, beneath a small removable cap approximately 20-30mm left of the shifter lever itself.
With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override mechanism is purely mechanical and does not require battery power to function. However, without any power, the steering column will remain locked. If the battery is completely dead and you cannot jump-start it even briefly, the steering lock will prevent safe rolling/towing unless the front wheels are off the ground (flatbed or tow dolly under front wheels).
