The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Connect a jump-starter or battery charger to the vehicle to restore 12V power—the rotary shifter requires electrical power to operate.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (push START button without pressing brake pedal twice, or use key fob if battery allows).
- The rotary shifter dial will rise from the console.
- Press the brake pedal and rotate the dial counterclockwise to N (neutral).
- If the brake-light switch has failed and the shift interlock will not release, locate the shift lock override—it is a small rubber cap on the lower left side of the center console near the shifter base.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to remove the cap, then insert the tool into the override slot and press down while rotating the dial to neutral.
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or towed with all four wheels on the ground for short distances at low speed (consult owner's manual for towing limits).
