⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- If the battery has any charge, press the brake pedal and push the START/STOP button to turn on ignition (do not attempt to start engine)
- The rotary selector should rise from the console; rotate it counterclockwise from P to N (Neutral)
- If the rotary dial does not rise or will not rotate out of Park, locate the manual shift release access
- Remove the rubber mat or trim panel in the front cup holder area of the center console
- You will find a small yellow or red pull tab/loop beneath this area
- Pull the tab firmly upward while attempting to rotate the selector to Neutral
- If the selector still will not move, there may be a secondary mechanical release requiring removal of additional console trim to access the transmission directly

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the rotary dial will not rise from the console. You must access the manual shift release in the cup holder area. Pull the release tab and simultaneously attempt to rotate the dial (it may require significant force). If this fails, the transmission may need to be placed in neutral mechanically from underneath the vehicle at the transmission itself—flatbed towing is recommended in this case. The electronic parking brake may also remain engaged without power; check your owner's manual for the EPB emergency release procedure.
