The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
- If the battery has any charge, turn the ignition to ON (press START without pressing the brake pedal) to allow the rotary shifter to rise
- Press the brake pedal and rotate the dial counterclockwise to select Neutral
- If the battery is completely dead and the shifter cannot be powered, locate the shift lock override access hole in the center console storage compartment area near the dial base
- Remove any trim cover or rubber plug to access the override slot
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot
- While pressing down on the override, manually attempt to rotate the dial to Neutral (may require significant force)
- If mechanical override is not possible due to electronic shifter design, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground - do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground
