The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and the vehicle is on level ground
- If battery is completely dead, the rotary shifter dial will be flush/retracted into the console—you cannot rotate it normally
- Locate the shift lock override access point: remove the small circular rubber cap in the center console directly behind (rearward of) the gear selector dial
- Using a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade, insert it into the override slot revealed beneath the cap
- Press down firmly on the override release while attempting to manually rotate the dial counterclockwise to the N position—this may require significant force as the mechanism is spring-loaded
- If the dial will not rotate at all with dead battery, you may need to provide temporary 12V power via jump-start or battery charger to energize the transmission control module sufficiently to allow the shift lock to release
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled—note that without power, there is no power steering assist

With zero 12V power, the rotary dial remains retracted and the shift lock solenoid is unpowered. The override release may not function without at least minimal battery voltage to the transmission module. Jump-starting or connecting a battery charger for 2-3 minutes may be necessary before the override will work. Some technicians report success manually prying the dial up while using the override, but this risks damage. Note: 2016 was the final year for the X250 generation before the redesign.
