🚨 2023 Jaguar XF: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 XF uses Jaguar's JaguarDrive Selector rotary gear shift dial that rises from the center console when the ignition is on.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with the parking brake applied and wheels chocked
  2. If the battery has any charge remaining, turn the ignition to ON/RUN position (press START button without foot on brake) - the rotary dial should rise and you may be able to rotate it to N
  3. If the rotary dial does not rise or will not rotate to N, locate the shift lock override slot in the center console
  4. Remove the small rectangular trim cap/cover directly behind (toward the rear of the vehicle) the rotary dial base - use a trim tool or flat-blade screwdriver wrapped in tape
  5. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, manually push the rotary dial counter-clockwise to the N position
  7. Keep the override depressed until the vehicle is secured or loaded
  8. Release the parking brake electrically if possible, or use the manual parking brake release procedure if EPB is stuck
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular trim cap directly behind the rotary dial base on the center console; the override slot is beneath this cap
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the rotary dial will not rise. You must remove the trim cap behind the dial base to access the mechanical shift lock override. The electronic parking brake will remain engaged with no power - you may need to jump start the vehicle briefly to release the EPB, or access the manual EPB release (caliper release procedure requiring workshop access). For flatbed loading with dead battery and engaged EPB, the vehicle must be dollied or skidded.
