🚨 2013 Jaguar XJ: Emergency Neutral
The 2013 XJ uses a rotary-dial gear selector that rises from the center console when the vehicle is started.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly applied and the vehicle is on level ground.
- If the battery has some charge, turn the ignition to ON (press Start/Stop without brake pedal) to allow the rotary shifter to rise.
- With ignition ON, press the brake pedal and rotate the shifter dial to N (Neutral).
- If the battery is completely dead and the rotary dial will not rise or function, locate the shift lock override access panel on the center console.
- The override access is typically a small rectangular cap or cover near the base of the shifter assembly - look for a small panel that can be pried up with a flat tool.
- Remove the cover to expose the shift lock override slot.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the rotary dial remains non-functional with dead battery, the vehicle may need to be placed on a flatbed with wheels free-rolling (not in Park mechanically locked).
Shift-lock override location
Small access panel near the base of the center console rotary shifter assembly; exact location may require removing a trim cap on the console surround.
With zero electrical power
With zero power, the rotary shifter will not rise and electronic shift-by-wire may not function. The mechanical shift lock override should allow neutral selection, but if the electronic transmission controller is completely unpowered, you may need to jump-start the 12V battery minimally to energize the transmission control module enough to release park. Alternatively, tow with wheels off ground.
