🚨 1992 Jaguar XJ6: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 XJ6 uses a traditional column-mounted automatic shifter with a mechanical shift-lock interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position (if battery has any power)
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot - look for a small cap or cover near the base of the column shifter shroud, typically on the lower right side
  4. Remove the cover by prying gently with a flathead screwdriver
  5. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter to Neutral
  7. If the shifter remains locked, verify you're pressing the override mechanism fully - you should feel it depress approximately 1/4 inch
Shift-lock override location
Small slot with removable cap near the base of the column shifter shroud, typically on the lower right side of the column - exact location may require inspection
With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, the shift-lock override is mechanical and does not require battery power. You may need to manually turn the ignition key to ACC to unlock the steering column before accessing the shifter. If the steering wheel is locked, you may need to rock it gently while turning the key.
