The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to position II (ON) if battery has any power
- Locate the shift-lock override slot on the console - it's a small rectangular opening with a cover, located directly forward of the shifter base on the left side of the J-gate
- Remove the cover by prying gently with a small flathead screwdriver or popping it out with your fingernail
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the override slot
- Press down firmly on the tool while simultaneously pressing the shifter release button on the side of the shifter
- Move the shifter rearward to Neutral position
- The shifter may feel stiff - maintain firm pressure on the override while moving the lever

With zero electrical power
With no electrical power, you must use the mechanical shift-lock override. The override is purely mechanical and does not require battery power to function. However, you may need assistance to turn the ignition key to position II if the steering lock is engaged - rock the steering wheel gently while turning the key.
