⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheels chocked if parking brake inoperative)
- Turn the ignition to position II (ON) if possible to provide power to the shift-lock solenoid
- If battery is dead and ignition cannot be powered, locate the shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the leather boot
- Remove the small rectangular plastic cover (approximately 1 inch square) by prying gently with a flat tool or finger
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter to Neutral
- If no power is available, continue holding the override down and manually move the shifter through the J-gate to Neutral position without pressing the brake
- Once in Neutral, remove the tool and replace the cover cap

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift-lock override must be used. The mechanical override physically disengages the solenoid-actuated locking pin, allowing the shifter to move freely through the gate without requiring brake pedal input or electrical power. The transmission will remain in Park mechanically until the override is activated.
