The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Press the brake pedal and attempt to press the start button to ACC or ON mode if the 12V battery has any residual charge.
- Locate the shift lock override: look for a small cap or rectangular slot directly adjacent to the shifter base, typically on the right side of the shifter console trim.
- Remove the override cap using a small screwdriver or key blade.
- Insert the tool into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If the hybrid system is active, ensure the vehicle is in tow mode: with ignition ON, shift to Neutral, then press and hold the Neutral position for 3-5 seconds until 'TOW MODE' appears in the instrument cluster.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and the shifter does not respond to the override, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the drive wheels free or all four wheels off the ground.
