🚨 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Grand Cherokee (WK2 generation) uses a traditional console-mounted electronic shifter with shift lock and a physical override release.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override: it is a small covered slot to the left of the shifter lever base, integrated into the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small plastic cover cap
- Insert the screwdriver straight down into the override slot
- While holding the override down with firm pressure, press the shifter release button and move the shifter to Neutral
- If ignition power is unavailable, maintain steady downward pressure on the override - the shifter will require more force but should release

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift lock override functions mechanically but the steering wheel will remain locked and you cannot turn the ignition. Apply firm, steady pressure on the override slot while manipulating the shifter. The mechanism will be notably stiffer without power. If the vehicle is on an incline, you may need to have someone rock it slightly to relieve transmission parking pawl pressure before the shifter will move.
