⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery power is available
- Locate the shift lock override access – there is a small rubber or plastic cap on the lower left side of the shifter housing base
- Remove the cap using a flat-head screwdriver or fingernail
- Insert a small flat-head screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and push down to release the shift lock
- While holding the override released, move the shifter toward Neutral position
- The shifter should move through Reverse to Neutral – hold the shifter in Neutral once reached
- If moving to a flatbed, vehicle can remain in Neutral with parking brake set during loading

With zero electrical power
With no battery power, the steering column will lock and the shifter will be locked in Park. The mechanical override allows shifting to Neutral without power, but the vehicle cannot be steered. Must use a flatbed or wheel dollies. The override is a mechanical release that does not require electrical power.
