🚨 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 Grand Cherokee uses an electronic monostable (spring-return) shifter that returns to center after each gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if you have any battery power (this may allow electronic shift release).
- Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small rectangular cap or slot immediately adjacent to the shifter base on the console, typically on the right side or front face of the shifter surround.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to carefully pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has no power and the electronic shifter will not respond even with the override, you may need to access the transmission linkage directly under the vehicle (this requires lifting the vehicle and is NOT recommended for roadside use—flatbed towing is safer).

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the electronic monostable shifter may not function even with the override button depressed. If the override does not allow shifting, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels free-rolling (not in Park mechanically). Do NOT attempt to tow with wheels on the ground.
