🚨 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 Wrangler 4xe uses a conventional PRND console-mounted shifter lever with electronic shift interlock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if possible (if battery has ANY residual charge).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cover, positioned directly forward and to the left of the shifter base on the console.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cover over the override slot.
  5. Press a small screwdriver or similar tool firmly into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you and moving it to Neutral.
  6. If the 12V battery is completely dead and the high-voltage system is inactive, you may need to jump the 12V battery minimally (even briefly) to release the electronic shifter lock before attempting the override.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift interlock is electrically locked. The mechanical override may not release without at least momentary 12V power to energize the solenoid. Attempt a jump-start of the 12V battery (located under the hood) to gain enough power to release the shifter, then immediately shift to Neutral. If jumping is impossible, the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with wheels free.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid. If the high-voltage system is active or uncertain, DO NOT flat-tow this vehicle. The electric drive components can be damaged. Always transport on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. Consult the owner's manual for the proper tow-mode procedure if moving under power, but with a dead 12V battery, assume flatbed transport only.
