The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if the battery has any residual charge.
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot with a plastic cap, positioned directly forward and to the left of the shifter base on the center console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert a small screwdriver, pen, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the brake pedal is inoperative or the shift interlock still won't release, keep pressure on the override and firmly pull the shifter toward you while moving it to Neutral.
