🚨 2025 Kia EV5: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Kia EV5 uses a rotary dial gear selector with electronic shift-by-wire system.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the electronic parking brake if possible (press and hold the EPB switch); if no power, chock all wheels securely.
- Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the START button with the key fob nearby.
- If the vehicle powers on, rotate the dial counterclockwise to Neutral position.
- If completely dead: Look for a small emergency release cover near the base of the rotary dial or in the center console storage area.
- Remove the cover and look for either a mechanical release button or a procedure involving rotating the dial while pressing an override.
- If no mechanical override is accessible, the transmission will remain in Park electronically—the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed truck with all wheels off the ground.
Shift-lock override location
Check near the base of the rotary dial or in the center console; exact location not yet confirmed in North American service documentation
With zero electrical power
The EV5's shift-by-wire system may have no mechanical override accessible to the driver. If the 12V battery is completely dead and the high-voltage system cannot boot, the transmission remains electronically locked in Park. A 12V jump-start to the auxiliary battery (typically under the hood or rear cargo area) may restore enough power to shift. If unsuccessful, flatbed transport is mandatory.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The EV5 is an electric vehicle and must NEVER be towed with drive wheels on the ground. Even in Neutral, towing can spin the motor and generate dangerous high voltage into a damaged system. Use only flatbed or wheel-lift with all wheels raised. The high-voltage system poses electrocution risk—do not attempt to disconnect the HV battery yourself.
