🚨 2023 Kia EV6 GT: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 EV6 GT uses an electronic rotary gear selector dial on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked (this is a flatbed-only tow situation).
  2. Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the brake and pushing the Power button - if the 12V battery has any residual charge, this may allow you to rotate the dial to N.
  3. If the dial will not rotate to N and you need to load onto a flatbed, locate the shift lock override access hole - it is a small circular rubber cap on the lower right side of the center console trim near the base of the gear selector.
  4. Pry out the rubber cap with a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
  5. Insert a small screwdriver or override tool into the revealed hole and press down while attempting to rotate the gear selector dial to N.
  6. If the vehicle still has no power and the override does not work, the rear wheels must be placed on dollies or the vehicle loaded with all wheels off the ground.
  7. Once in N or on the flatbed with wheels secured, ensure the parking brake is released if possible (may require 12V power via jump box connected to the 12V battery under the hood).

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the rotary dial will not function and the shift lock override may also not release the transmission. Jump-starting the 12V battery (located under the hood) or connecting a jump box is the most reliable method to get temporary power. If this fails, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with dollies under the rear wheels or all four wheels off the ground.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The EV6 GT is an electric vehicle and must ONLY be towed on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground OR with the rear wheels on dollies. Never tow with rear wheels on the ground as this will spin the motor and cause severe damage to the drive system. Even in N, prolonged rolling can generate voltage and damage components.
