🚨 2010 Kia Forte: Emergency Neutral
The 2010 Forte uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with a cable-actuated Park/Neutral mechanism and electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock all wheels before proceeding.
- If the battery has some charge remaining, turn the ignition to the ON position (do not need to start the engine), press the brake pedal firmly, and shift to Neutral normally.
- If the battery is completely dead or the shift lock will not release, locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening covered by a rubber cap directly forward of the shifter base on the driver's side.
- Pry out the small rubber cap using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral—you do not need to press the brake pedal.
- The vehicle can now roll freely; ensure it is properly secured before moving.

With zero electrical power
With zero battery power, the shift lock override is your only option. The override mechanically releases the shift lock solenoid, allowing the shifter cable to move freely regardless of electrical power. No ignition or brake input is required when using the override.
