🚨 2019 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- The push-button shifter requires 12V power to operate - if the 12V battery is completely dead, you cannot shift electronically.
- If the 12V battery has minimal charge, turn the ignition to ON (press start button without brake pedal twice) and press the N (Neutral) button.
- If completely dead: Locate the shift lock manual release under a small rectangular cover on the lower console panel below and to the right of the gear selector buttons.
- Pry off the cover cap carefully with a flat tool.
- Inside you'll find a yellow or white pull tab/loop - pull this tab while an assistant presses the Park button (or while you apply pressure to the P button if accessible).
- With the override pulled, the transmission should mechanically release to Neutral.
- If the vehicle still won't roll, you may need to apply 12V jumper power to the underhood terminals to energize the shift-by-wire system momentarily.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter cannot operate normally. Use the manual shift lock release (pull tab under cover near shifter base) to mechanically release the parking pawl. If this fails, apply external 12V power via underhood jump terminals to energize the system briefly. The high-voltage EV system does not need to be active.

CRITICAL: The Niro EV must be towed on a flatbed truck only - never tow with any wheels on the ground. The electric motor is mechanically connected to the front wheels at all times, and towing with wheels down will generate electricity back into the system and cause severe damage to the motor and power electronics, even in Neutral. Do not attempt to flat-tow or dolly-tow this vehicle.
