🚨 2019-2024 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral
2019-2022 models use push-button gear selectors (P-R-N-D buttons); 2023-2024 models use a rotary dial electronic shifter on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- For 2019-2022 push-button models: Turn ignition ON if possible (press start twice without brake) and press the N button to select Neutral.
- For 2023-2024 rotary dial models: Turn ignition ON if possible and rotate the dial to the N position.
- If the 12V battery is dead and the shifter is unresponsive, locate the shift lock override release.
- 2019-2022: Look for a small rectangular cover on the lower console panel below/beside the push-buttons. Pry it off to reveal a pull tab.
- 2023-2024: Look for a small cover near the base of the rotary shifter assembly (typically forward or to the side). Remove the cover to access the override slot or pull mechanism.
- Pull the override tab (2019-2022) or insert a tool into the override slot and push down while rotating to N (2023-2024).
- If completely dead with no mechanical release response, connect 12V jumper cables to underhood terminals to provide enough power to shift electronically.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled slowly.
Shift-lock override location
2019-2022: Small cover on lower console near push-buttons, contains pull tab inside. 2023-2024: Small cover near base of rotary dial shifter, access varies by exact MY but typically forward of dial
With zero electrical power
Electronic shifters require 12V power to function. With zero power, use the mechanical shift lock override (location depends on year/shifter type). If override alone doesn't work, apply external 12V power to underhood jump posts to briefly energize the shifter system. The high-voltage EV battery does not need to be active for shifting.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: All Niro EV models must be transported on a flatbed truck ONLY. Never tow with any wheels on the ground, even in Neutral. The electric drive motor remains mechanically connected to the front axle, and towing will force the motor to generate current that can destroy the inverter and motor. Flat-towing or dolly-towing will cause catastrophic damage.
