🚨 2020 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 Niro EV uses an electronic push-button gear selector (P-R-N-D buttons) located on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If the 12V battery has any charge, press the start button twice (without brake pedal) to turn ignition ON, then press the N (Neutral) button.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, locate the shift lock manual release.
- Find a small rectangular cover on the lower console panel below and to the right of the push-button selector.
- Carefully pry off the cover with a flat-blade tool.
- Inside is a pull tab (usually yellow or white) - pull this tab firmly while attempting to press the Park button or while applying pressure to shift mechanism.
- The mechanical release should disengage the parking pawl and allow the vehicle to roll in Neutral.
- If this does not work, connect 12V jumper power to the underhood jump posts to energize the system long enough to shift to N electronically.

With zero electrical power
The push-button shifter is fully electronic and will not respond without 12V power. Use the manual shift lock release (pull tab under small cover near shifter) to mechanically disengage the parking pawl. If unsuccessful, apply 12V jumper power to underhood terminals briefly to activate the shifter electronics. High-voltage system does not need to be active.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Niro EV must be transported on a flatbed truck only - never tow with any wheels touching the ground. The electric motor is always mechanically connected to the front wheels, and any towing with wheels down (even in Neutral) will rotate the motor, generating electricity that will severely damage the motor and inverter. Flat-towing or dolly-towing is not permitted under any circumstances.
