🚨 2021 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply parking brake if functional and ensure the vehicle is secure.
- If the 12V battery has partial charge, press the start button twice without touching the brake pedal to activate ignition, then press the N (Neutral) button.
- If the 12V battery is fully dead and the shifter is unresponsive, locate the shift lock manual override.
- Look for a small rectangular cover panel on the lower console area, below or to the side of the push-button shifter.
- Pry the cover off gently using a trim tool or flat-blade screwdriver.
- Inside you will find a pull tab or pull loop (typically yellow or white) - pull this firmly.
- While pulling the override tab, have an assistant press the P button, or apply pressure to the shifter mechanism area.
- The mechanical override should release the parking pawl, allowing the transmission to enter Neutral and the vehicle to roll.
- If the override does not work alone, connect 12V jumper cables to the underhood jump terminals to provide temporary power to the shifter system.

With zero electrical power
Electronic push-button shifters require 12V power to operate. When completely dead, use the mechanical shift lock override (pull tab under cover near shifter) to manually release the parking mechanism. If this is ineffective, temporarily restore 12V power using jumper cables connected to underhood terminals. The high-voltage EV battery does not need to be charged or active.

CRITICAL: This vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed for towing - never tow with wheels on the ground. The Niro EV's electric motor is permanently connected to the front axle, and any wheel rotation (even in Neutral) will spin the motor and generate electrical current. This will cause catastrophic damage to the motor, inverter, and drive system. Flat-towing and dolly-towing are strictly prohibited.
