🚨 2023 Kia Niro EV: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 Niro EV uses an electronic shift-by-wire push-button transmission selector with P/R/N/D buttons located on the center console.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked—this is critical for EVs with electronic parking brakes.
- Attempt to press the brake pedal and push the 'N' (Neutral) button on the shifter console. If the 12V battery is weak but not completely dead, this may work.
- If the vehicle has any 12V power, try turning the ignition to ON (press START button without brake pedal) and then pressing 'N' while holding the brake.
- If completely dead with no power: The Niro EV does NOT have a mechanical shift lock override accessible to the driver—the shift-by-wire system requires 12V power to function.
- With zero 12V power, you must jump-start or replace the 12V battery (located under the hood) to restore power before you can shift to neutral.
- After restoring 12V power, press START without brake pedal, hold brake, and press 'N' button.
- If the shift interlock is the problem (not battery): Look for a small shift lock override slot—if present, it would be near the shifter button panel, typically covered by a small cap or trim piece that pries off with a flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a key or small screwdriver into the override slot while holding the brake and pressing 'N'.
Shift-lock override location
Shift lock override slot, if present, is typically near the shift button assembly on the console, covered by a removable cap—exact location not confirmed for this generation
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function. You MUST jump-start the 12V battery (under hood) or replace it to gain any shifter function. The Niro EV cannot be shifted to neutral mechanically without 12V power.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: Kia Niro EV MUST be flatbed towed—do NOT tow with drive wheels on the ground. Even in neutral, towing with wheels down will destroy the electric drive system. Always use a flatbed or wheel-lift with rear wheels raised. If moving short distances in a shop with 12V power restored, ensure vehicle is in N and parking brake is released via the electronic switch.
