🚨 2017 Kia Niro Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2017 Niro Hybrid uses a conventional electronic shift lever on the center console with a traditional PRND gate pattern.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chocked.
  2. If you have ANY 12V power: Turn the ignition to ON (press START button without pressing brake pedal), press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shift lever to N (Neutral).
  3. If the shift lever won't move due to shift interlock failure: Locate the shift lock override slot on the console near the shifter base.
  4. The override slot is typically covered by a small rectangular cap directly adjacent to the shifter—on the left or right side of the shifter base.
  5. Carefully pry off the cap using a flathead screwdriver or your fingernail.
  6. While pressing and holding the brake pedal, insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly.
  7. While holding the override down, move the shift lever from P to N.
  8. Remove the tool and replace the cap.
  9. If you have ZERO 12V power (completely dead battery): You must restore some 12V power first. The 12V battery is located under the hood.
  10. Jump-start the vehicle or connect a battery jump pack to restore minimal 12V power—you don't need to start the hybrid system, just enough power for the shift interlock.
  11. Once 12V power is restored, follow the normal procedure (ignition ON, brake pressed, shift to N) or use the override slot if needed.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap-covered slot located on the center console immediately adjacent to the shifter base, typically on the left side of the shifter when viewed from the driver's seat
With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shift lock will not release. Jump-start from the 12V battery under the hood or use a jump pack to restore minimal power. You do not need to start the hybrid system—just enough 12V to power the shift interlock solenoid. Alternatively, use the shift lock override slot with whatever residual power remains.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID TOW WARNING: The 2017 Niro Hybrid should be flatbed towed for distances over 1-2 miles. Short-distance neutral towing (such as onto a flatbed) at very low speeds (under 5 mph) is generally acceptable, but extended towing with wheels on the ground can damage the hybrid transmission. For any significant distance, use a flatbed or tow with front wheels raised (front-wheel drive vehicle). Release the electronic parking brake before moving—if 12V power is dead, you may need to restore power to release the parking brake.
