🚨 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid: Emergency Neutral
The 2019 Niro Hybrid uses a console-mounted electronic shift-by-wire lever with a conventional PRND gate pattern and electronic park lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly (or have wheel chocks ready if brake cannot be set).
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON if possible (press START button without brake pedal twice) to power the shifter electronics.
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shifter to Neutral.
- If the shifter will not move due to failed brake-light switch or dead 12V battery, locate the shift-lock override slot on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the console shifter assembly).
- Remove the small rectangular rubber cap or plastic cover on the left side of the shifter base by prying gently with a flat tool.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward to Neutral.
- Keep the tool inserted and shifter in Neutral position while moving the vehicle.
- Once positioned, apply parking brake or chocks before removing the override tool.
Shift-lock override location
Left side of the shifter base on the console, hidden under a small removable rubber or plastic cap; press down in this slot while moving shifter to bypass interlock.
With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift-lock override is your only option—the shifter electronics will not function at all. Use the mechanical override slot on the left side of the shifter base. Do NOT attempt to jump-start solely to shift if the hybrid system has warnings; use the override and tow in Neutral with rear wheels off the ground or on flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The Niro Hybrid uses a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). For towing, the vehicle MUST be towed with the rear wheels OFF the ground (dollies) or on a flatbed. Do NOT tow with rear wheels on the ground for any distance, even in Neutral, as the transmission can be damaged without the hybrid system running to provide lubrication. If the 12V battery is dead, the hybrid system cannot operate.
