🚨 2018 Kia Niro PHEV: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 Kia Niro PHEV uses a conventional console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift-lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if you have any battery power remaining
  3. Locate the shift-lock override slot - it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key from your key fob to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot
  5. Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pulling the shift lever toward you out of Park
  6. Once in Neutral, you may remove the tool - the shifter will remain in Neutral
  7. If the electronic parking brake is engaged and will not release due to dead battery, the vehicle must be flatbedded

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the shift-lock override will still function mechanically to release the shifter into Neutral. However, the electronic parking brake (EPB) cannot be released without power - if EPB is engaged, the rear wheels will remain locked and the vehicle cannot roll. In this case, flatbed towing is required. If EPB was not engaged, the vehicle can roll freely in Neutral once the shift lock is bypassed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The Niro PHEV has an electronic parking brake that requires 12V power to release. If the EPB is engaged with a dead battery, the rear wheels are locked and the vehicle MUST be flatbedded - do not attempt to tow with rear wheels on the ground. Before towing, disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal or remove the EV fuse (check owner's manual) to prevent system damage during transport.
