🚨 2022 Kia Niro PHEV: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 Niro PHEV uses a conventional electronic shift-by-wire console-mounted lever with a button on the front face.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is applied (or wheel chocks deployed if no power).
  2. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular slot covered by a removable plastic cap, located on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the center console near the shifter).
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the cap covering the override slot.
  4. Insert the key blade or a small flathead screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter rearward out of Park into Neutral.
  5. If the 12V battery is completely dead, you may need to jump-start the 12V system or connect a portable jump pack to the under-hood 12V terminals to restore enough power for the shift-by-wire system to release—the mechanical override may require some residual power to disengage the park pawl solenoid.
  6. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can roll freely; secure it immediately.

With zero electrical power
The shift-by-wire system may require residual 12V power to fully disengage the transmission park pawl. If the mechanical override does not allow the shifter to move, connect a jump pack or jumper cables to the 12V battery (under hood, positive terminal marked, negative to ground point) to provide minimal power, then retry the override. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not assist with this.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
PHEV/HYBRID WARNING: The Niro PHEV has both a high-voltage hybrid battery and a conventional 12V battery. The shift lock and most vehicle electronics run on the 12V system. If towing, consult the owner's manual for tow mode procedures—some hybrids require wheels-up towing only. For flatbed transport, Neutral is sufficient, but do NOT attempt to flat-tow this vehicle for extended distances as the transmission and electric motor can be damaged. Always use a flatbed or dolly with front wheels off the ground.
