🚨 2025 Kia Niro PHEV: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 Niro PHEV continues the second-generation electronic shift-by-wire console lever design from 2023.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is applied (or wheel chocks deployed if no power).
- Locate the shift lock override: on the second-generation Niro (2023+), look for a small covered slot or access point on the left or right side of the shifter base, typically covered by a small rectangular cap.
- Use the metal key blade or a small flathead screwdriver to pry off the cap.
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down or pull the tab (depending on mechanism) while moving the shifter out of Park into Neutral.
- If there is no 12V power at all, the shift-by-wire system may not release fully. Connect a jump pack or jumper cables to the 12V battery terminals under the hood to provide minimal power, then use the override procedure.
- Once in Neutral, secure the vehicle immediately to prevent rolling.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cap-covered slot on the side of the shifter base (check left side first, near driver's side of center console). Exact placement may vary slightly by trim.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock and park pawl solenoid will not release. Connect a portable jump starter or jumper cables to the 12V battery under the hood (positive terminal marked, ground point on chassis or negative terminal) to restore minimal power. This should allow the override mechanism to function. The high-voltage hybrid system does not control the shifter.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
PHEV/HYBRID WARNING: The Niro PHEV uses a dual-clutch transmission and electric motors. If towing, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed or with the front wheels completely off the ground. DO NOT flat-tow this vehicle—extended towing with wheels on the ground can severely damage the transmission and hybrid drivetrain, even in Neutral. For short moves (onto a flatbed), Neutral is safe. Always consult the owner's manual for official tow mode or transport mode if available.
