🚨 2018 Kia Niro: Emergency Neutral

The 2018 Niro hybrid uses a push-button electronic shifter (SBW) mounted on the center console with Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive buttons, consistent with the 2017 model.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock all wheels before proceeding.
  2. Attempt to restore 12V power by jump-starting the 12V battery located under the hood—the push-button shifter requires electrical power to operate.
  3. Once power is restored, turn the ignition to ON (press the start button without pressing the brake), then press the Neutral button on the shifter.
  4. If 12V power cannot be restored, locate the mechanical shift lock override: open the small plastic cover on the lower driver's side of the center console, just forward and to the left of the shifter button panel.
  5. The override access may be a small rectangular slot; consult the owner's manual for the exact location as Kia hybrids sometimes hide this under trim panels.
  6. Insert a flathead screwdriver or key blade into the override slot and press down while attempting to press the Neutral button (if any power is available) or manually release the parking pawl.
  7. If the electronic system remains unresponsive even with the override, the vehicle may need to be placed on a flatbed—push-button shifters have limited mechanical backup.
Shift-lock override location
The shift lock override is typically located under a small plastic cover on the lower driver's side of the center console near the shifter button panel; exact location varies and should be verified in the owner's manual.
With zero electrical power
The push-button electronic shifter is entirely dependent on 12V power. With zero power, the override slot (if accessible) may allow some mechanical release, but full function requires jump-starting the 12V battery. The hybrid high-voltage system does not directly power the shifter.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID CAUTION: If the vehicle must be towed, use a flatbed or ensure the front wheels (which are connected to the electric motor) are OFF the ground. Towing with the front wheels down can generate unwanted voltage in the hybrid system and damage the motor/inverter. Neutral does not fully disconnect the motor from the drivetrain.
