🚨 2021 Kia Niro: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 Kia Niro hybrid uses a traditional console-mounted shift lever with electronic shift lock.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to the ON position (press start button twice without brake pedal)—this provides power to release the shift lock.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Move the shift lever from P to N.
- If the shift lever will not move and you have 12V power, check the brake light fuse (fuse panel under driver's side dashboard) and verify brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed.
- If no electrical power or shift lock remains engaged, locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cover cap on the left side of the shifter base near the console.
- Remove the override cover cap by prying gently with a flat tool.
- Insert a flathead screwdriver or the metal end of the ignition key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously moving the shift lever from P to N.
- Keep the override depressed until the shifter is fully in Neutral.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, you must use the shift lock override slot. Jump-starting the 12V battery (located under the hood) is the preferred method to restore normal shifter operation. The hybrid system high-voltage battery does not power the shift lock mechanism.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: The Niro hybrid must be transported on a flatbed truck only—never tow with drive wheels on the ground. The electric motor remains mechanically coupled to the drivetrain even in Neutral, and towing will cause severe damage to the hybrid transaxle and electric motor. Do not attempt to disconnect the 12V battery while in Neutral as this may prevent reengaging Park later.
