🚨 2023 Kia Niro: Emergency Neutral

The 2023 Kia Niro is the all-new second generation and uses a console-mounted shift-by-wire electronic lever with updated shift lock system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the electronic parking brake using the switch on the center console.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position (press start button twice without brake pedal)—this provides power to release the shift lock.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  4. Move the shift lever from P to N.
  5. If the shift lever will not move and you have 12V power, check the brake light fuse (engine compartment and interior fuse panels) and verify brake lights illuminate when pedal is pressed.
  6. If no electrical power or shift lock remains engaged, locate the shift lock override access—look for a small cap or slot near the base of the shifter assembly on the left side or forward left corner.
  7. Remove the override cover by prying gently with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver.
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override release mechanism and push/press firmly while simultaneously attempting to move the shift lever from P to N.
  9. Maintain pressure on the override while shifting to Neutral.
  10. If the electronic shifter remains completely unresponsive with zero power, the vehicle may require professional extraction as the second-generation shift-by-wire system has limited mechanical override capability.
Shift-lock override location
Near the base of the console shifter assembly, typically on the left side or forward left area—look for a small removable cap; exact position may vary by production date as this is a new generation
With zero electrical power
The 2023 redesigned Niro uses shift-by-wire technology. With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter may not respond even with the override. Jump-starting the 12V battery (under the hood) is strongly recommended. The 12V battery powers all shifter functions; the high-voltage hybrid battery cannot assist the shift lock. If jump-starting is impossible, professional flatbed extraction may be required.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
HYBRID VEHICLE: The Niro hybrid must be transported on a flatbed truck only—never tow with drive wheels on the ground. The electric motor and hybrid transaxle are always mechanically connected even in Neutral. Towing with wheels down will destroy the electric motor, inverter, and transmission. The second-generation Niro may have additional electronic interlocks—ensure parking brake is applied and do not disconnect 12V power once in Neutral.
