The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition to ON (press start button twice without brake pedal) to energize the shift system
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter rearward (toward P from the center position) to engage Neutral
- If the 12V battery is completely dead and the shifter won't respond, locate the shift lock release access cover on the console near the shifter base
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade to carefully pry off the shift lock release cover
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shifter
- With the override engaged and brake pedal pressed, move the shifter to access Neutral

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, you must use the shift lock override slot (under the small cover near shifter base) while pressing the brake pedal. The electronic shifter requires at least some 12V power to function; if override doesn't work, the hybrid system cannot be shifted and the vehicle must be placed on a flatbed with wheels free or dollies used.

As a hybrid, the Niro has an electric drive mode and traction motor. Even in Neutral with the hybrid system off, slight regenerative drag may occur if the 12V system energizes unexpectedly.
