🚨 2015 Kia Optima Hybrid: Emergency Neutral

The 2015 Optima Hybrid uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift lock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if 12V power is available (this may require jump-starting the 12V battery, NOT the high-voltage hybrid battery).
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular access slot with a plastic cover cap located on the left side of the shifter base, toward the driver's side.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the plastic cover cap.
  5. While pressing firmly on the brake pedal (if power is available), insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down.
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral.
  7. If the vehicle must be towed, ensure it is on a flatbed—the hybrid system's electric motor is mechanically connected to the transmission and wheels.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the shift lock may still be engaged. You MUST jump-start the 12V battery (located in the trunk) to at least ACC power to release the shifter. The override slot may still function mechanically without power on some units, but this is not guaranteed. Do not attempt to jump-start or access the high-voltage hybrid battery system.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: This is a hybrid vehicle. The electric motor is directly connected to the transmission. NEVER tow with wheels on the ground—severe transmission and hybrid system damage will occur. Use a flatbed truck only. The high-voltage battery is separate from the 12V battery; only the 12V battery (in trunk) should be jump-started for shifting purposes.
