⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and set the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a removable cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side of the shifter housing
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap
- Insert the screwdriver or key straight down into the override slot while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shifter out of Park
- If successful, shift to Neutral and release the override—the shifter will remain in Neutral

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override may still function mechanically, but the shifter may be difficult or impossible to move without any 12V power to the transmission control module. If the override does not release the shifter, the vehicle must be flatbedded. Do NOT attempt to jump-start the hybrid system; use a 12V jump source only to power accessories and release the shift lock.

The Optima Hybrid has a high-voltage battery system. Never attempt to jump-start or charge the high-voltage system. Use only the 12V battery for jump-starting accessories. If the vehicle must be towed, flatbed towing is REQUIRED—do not dolly or tow with drive wheels on the ground, as the electric motor/generator components can be damaged and the battery may not charge properly during towing. Consult the owner's manual towing section for proper transport mode if the vehicle has residual power.
